Visioning Exercise
Create Your Vision
Most high performers are excellent at execution — hitting targets, leading teams, building businesses. What’s less common is having a vivid, emotionally alive picture of the life behind all that achievement. That’s what this exercise is for.
A vision isn’t a strategic plan. It’s a first-person account of who you’re becoming — your life three to five years from now, fully realized across every dimension: who you are as a man, a leader, a partner, a father, a builder. It’s a place to go toward, a place to come from, and when it’s clear enough, the compass that makes every hard decision easier.
This is the most important homework in the entire program. Don’t rush it.
Watch for these common tendencies:
-
Defaulting to goals and strategies instead of painting a picture
-
Staying vague to avoid the vulnerability of real commitment
-
Writing what looks impressive instead of what actually matters to you
-
Putting it off because it feels unclear or uncomfortable
That last one especially — that’s your Saboteurs keeping you in familiar territory. Notice them, and write anyway.
How to write it:
-
Write in the present tense, from the future — 3 to 5 years out, as though it’s already real. Start with: “It is [year]…”
-
Aim for 2 to 3 pages. Be specific and concrete — the more sensory detail, the more real it becomes to your brain.
-
It should feel exciting and slightly uncomfortable. If it doesn’t stretch you, it’s a plan. A vision pulls you forward.
-
No separation between personal and professional. Include everything that matters.
Prompts to guide you:
Who are you becoming?
-
What do you look like, how do you feel, and what does your health and energy look like?
-
What are you most proud to have become — in terms of character, integrity, and how you show up?
-
What have you overcome? What new strengths, habits, or convictions define you now?
How you’re living
-
What does your daily life look and feel like at its best?
-
What experiences are bringing you adventure, depth, and joy?
-
What are you building, creating, or contributing beyond your immediate circle?
Your relationships
-
Who are your closest people, and what is different about those relationships?
-
How are you showing up as a partner, father, and friend?
-
Who are you investing in, and who’s investing in you?
Your work and leadership
-
What does your business, career, or organization look like?
-
How are you leading — and what do the people around you say about working with you?
-
What have you built, and what does it make possible for your life and for others?
Purpose and legacy
-
What does it look like to be fully living into your values?
-
What do you want to be known for — by your family, your team, your community?
-
What are you doing with the gifts and platform that are uniquely yours?
